Several studies have been conducted at the University of Michigan that support the health industries claim that lacking adequate sleep can result in obesity. Your body needs the time to rejuvenate, and if you are not giving yourself this valuable time, you are hurting it. Even the most physically fit person can affect their metabolism if they don’t get adequate sleep.
What is adequate sleep?
Seven to nine hours is thought to be more than sufficient. However, the average American goes to bed by 10:30 p.m, falls asleep by 11:00 p.m. and wakes up at 5:00 a.m. to be to work by 9:00 a.m. This means that on average he or she only gets six hours of sleep on a good night.
What is the solution?
If you can squeeze in a twenty minute power knap between the time you get home and dinner, you’ll get enough sleep to rejuvenate your body. Try getting to bed earlier and avoid foods that will keep you awake so you can fall asleep within 25 minutes of going to bed.
